Contractors World UK & Ireland Vol 4 No 2 - page 4

Editorial Comment
Are things
getting back to
The weather seems to be settling
into the expected pattern for this
time of year - unpredictable, but a long way from the
horrendous conditions that swept across large parts of
the country earlier.
This issue looks at how the Government and con-
tractors have implemented repairs and other works to
reduce the risk of flooding again.
The economy is also recovering as politicians begin
to plot their campaigns for the General Elections next
year. There’s still the debate of HS2 (personally, I cannot
see the value in it as it stands) and there could be an-
other London Crossrail.
What if these were to be connected into a central hub
airport that can open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and
has virtually unlimited expansion capabilities. Pie in the
sky? Not according to Lord Foster (Foster+Partners)
who makes a case for the airport. And we show how
it could be financed without impacting on the tax payer.
Hillhead 2014
It seems like only a few months ago that people flocked
to the Peak District to see the latest innovations for the
quarrying and related industries at the biannual Hillhead
exhibition. Its here again and I’ll be there, hopefully in
the sunshine. I give a glimpse of what to expect in the
following pages.
