Dewhurst Industrial Solutions, after discussions with the client, proposed using a 100% liquid applied silicone solution that, although proven through the USA and other countries, has only recently been introduced into the UK. The Gaco Liquid Roof System is low odour silicone based and, as such gives off no heavy solvent fumes and is virtually odourless. Another advantage in this application. It was developed in America over thirty years ago, during which time it has gained a well proven track record for a wide range of roofing applications in commercial, public buildings, industrial and domestic situations. It has also proved its efficiency across a wide range of atmospheric conditions. Gaco products also include Walkway coating to provide visible safe walkways and additional grip. The system has also been proven in the more extreme weathers of North America. The company gives a 20 year product guarantee. So Challenging So Contractors Did Not Quote Contractors World talked to Philip Dewhurst, Director of Dewhurst Industrial Solutions about the project which many roofing contractors did not even want to quote for. He said that the total contract over the 670 m² roof took some 6 weeks, 4 weeks of this was in preparing the surface. The embedded 19 mm limestone chips in asphalt had to be cut out with grinders. Because of the noise, this work had to be outside of normal theatre operation hours. This meant early or late hours, working for the team of 5 people - all employed by the company. “On other projects, the preparation time is much less, and so is the time required to apply the 100% liquid applied silicone . However, on this project, there was so much plant on the roof that, in some places, the roofers had less than 380 mm (15 inches) clearance in which to work.” Having ground the surface as flat as possible, the next issue was overlaying the carrier felt, which was again fraught with problems due to the amount of plant, However, in the majority of instances, carrier felt is not essential when using the Gaco system. |
