Short-Tail Swing Excavators On Motorway

Ten Hitachi short-tail swing exca-

vators have been working on the

M3 smart motorway project in the

counties of Hampshire and Surrey.

Eight ZX135US-5 and

ZX225USLC-5 excavators owned by

Skyland Drainage Contractors, and

a further two ZX225USLC-5s owned

by Davey Civils, have been em-

ployed on the subcontractors’

drainage works.

Skyland Drainage Contractors

is part of the M O’Brien Group,

which has over 150 mini, medium

and large Zaxis excavators at its

disposal.

Having previously hired Zaxis

excavators, Kent-based Davey Civils

has been an Hitachi customer for

one year.

Easier and safer work

The zero-tail swing of the two ZX225USLC-5 excavators

is a particular advantage for drainage and pipeline

projects.

“They make it easier and safer to work in

confined spaces such as the side of a busy

motorway like the M3.”

Both models were supplied with service contracts

from Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK)

Massive Prehistoric

Stone Monument

Discovered

Through a number of

non-invasive geophysical

prospection technologies, including the MALÅ

MIRA System, researchers have discovered

what is thought to be the largest Neotholic

monument yet.

Dating back about 4 500 years, the monu-

ment was found less than 3 kilometres from

Stonehenge, hidden beneath the Durrington

Walls henge.

The Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project,

led by the University of Birmingham, the

Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological

Prospection and Virtual Archaeology and the

Central Institute for Meteorology and

Geodynamic (ZAMG) in Vienna, is one of the

largest projects of its kind.

The project has brought together leading

experts from various fields and institutions in

the hopes of further understanding the

Stonehenge landscape.
