Alimak Hek modularity makes all the right moves!Alimak Hek modularity makes all the right moves!

The modular design of Alimak Hek passenger and goods hoists makes all the difference in moving workers and large materials during the building of the prestigious 3 Merchant Square project in London.

Taylor’s Hoists were asked by the Mace Group to solve the logistical challenge of delivering large bathroom pods and cladding panels into the building whilst also moving workers efficiently and safely during the construction phase. Taylor’s Hoists with the help of Alimak Hek UK provided an innovative solution, which was achieved by combining a Hek TPM Material Hoist with an Alimak Scando 450 Construction Hoist sharing the same masts.

The Alimak Scando 450 construction hoist range combines all the elements of the established “Scando 650” concept including cost saving modularity, enhanced energy efficiency, improved ergonomics and productivity, with the 20/32 model used on this project being a cost effective alternative for the popular Scando 650 20/32 model.

Scando 450 DOL 20/32 Passenger/Goods Hoist with a 1.4 m wide x 3.0 m long cage and 2 tonne capacity.

Hek TPM3000T2 Material Hoist with 3.2 m wide x 3.7 m long platform and 2.5 tonne capacity.      The delivery of tall bathroom pods was a particular challenge and the TPM machines were the ideal solution.

The VFC drives allowed accurate floor levelling whilst also being set up so that the platform flap opened out on to a steel support angle below the floor slab creating a flat and smooth transfer of the pods into the building within the height of the floors.

The hoist and platform combination was used in two locations on the project with each one using the following machines:-

  • Scando 450 DOL 20/32 Passenger/Goods Hoist with a 1.4 m wide x 3.0 m long cage and 2 tonne capacity.
  • Hek TPM3000T2 Material Hoist with 3.2 m wide x 3.7 m long platform and 2.5 tonne capacity.

Taylor’s Hoists Operations Manager Gordon Craig commented on the success of this innovative solution. He said: “It was the first time that this progressive equipment had been implemented in London with interest received from other contractors and is an example of how a continued and close relationship with the hoist manufacturer helps Elliott Thomas provide the most innovative and effective solutions to these types of logistical challenges.”
