No hanging around
for Sellafield stack
removal team

The skyline of the Sellafield site has undergone a significant change, at least only temporarily, with the removal of a 55 m tall ventilation stack.  The 100 tonne Silos Direct Encapsulation Plant (SDP) stack was successfully lifted recently using two large mobile cranes by the Sellafield Ltd project team.

The team then loaded the stack onto a Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) in order to transfer it to an on-site storage location, where it will remain until its re-erection in the future.
After its re-erection SDP will provide a grout encapsulation process for intermediate level waste, supporting the decommissioning operations taking place on the Sellafield Site.

Richard Dobson, Sellafield Ltd project engineer, said: “The stack removal is the culmination of the preparatory works to enable our contractor to deliver the next phase of SDP build and installation. Sellafield Ltd, in conjunction with contractors VCUK, Nuvia and Mammoet, have been preparing this lift for around 18 months.

“It has been planned in meticulous detail, with the work including demolition, ground preparation, safety case development and lifting attachment design, fabrication and testing.

“The final scheme produced by Mammoet consisted of a tandem “Top & Tail” lift and transfer of the stack to its temporary storage location using SPMT’s and support steelwork without the need for further crane operations.

“The successful completion of the stack removal project demonstrates that such difficult and potentially high hazard operations can be safely carried out at Sellafield.”
