Sandiefield Blowdown
Opens Another Chapter
In The Regeneration Of The Gorbals

Two tower blocks at 170 and 200 Sandiefield in the Gorbals area of Glasgow were demolished on Sunday 21st July to make way for new development projects in the heart of the award winning Crown Street Regeneration Area.

The 24 storey blocks stood 69 metres tall and contained 394 flats. They were completed in 1971 and have now been taken down in a carefully controlled explosive demolition following months of detailed planning with the building owner New Gorbals Housing Association, the Police, Glasgow City Council, the Highways Agency, Network Rail, and extensive engagement with the local community.

The demolition project, commissioned by New Gorbals Housing Association and managed by Coleman & Company Limited since February this year, will pave the way for a new Health Centre for the Gorbals as well as social housing and office accommodation for the Association.

New Gorbals Housing Association Chairperson, Raymond Shannon who lived in Sandiefield for 15 years until 2007,said: “Every single household in the flats were given the opportunity to be rehoused in a new or modernised home in the Gorbals and I’m pleased to say that over 70% decided to take up that offer.

The 24 storey blocks stood 69 metres tall and contained 394 flats.
