King Lifting Invests In Three Heavy CranesKing Lifting Invests In Three Heavy Cranes

King Lifting has increased the size of the fleet with 3 additional Heavy cranes. A Terex AC140-1 Compact has already been delivered and an AC200-1 and a LTM1300-6.2 will be added into the fleet within the next 14 months.

Tristan King said "This investment will support the company’s existing heavy crane fleet and continue our renowned quality of service ensuring we offer the most advanced cranes in the market."

Once delivered, the LTM1300-6.2 will be the first crane of this type to operate in the UK. This crane has a 78 meter main boom, 96 t counterweight, 5 m, 12 m, 21 m travelling fly jib, 42 m fixed fly and 70 meter luffing fly jib. The crane also features variable support outrigger base duties which will enable the cranes 4 outriggers to be set in different positions and still have working duties.

TBM Makes Breakthrough On National Grid ContractTBM Makes Breakthrough On National Grid Contract

Costain and its partners have reached a significant milestone in National Grid’s project to ensure security of supply for London’s future electricity demands.

The project involves driving some 32 km of tunnels to form what client National Grid describes as an ‘electricity superhighway’ underneath the capital, allowing it to lay new high-voltage cables.

As part of this London Power Tunnels contract, tunnel boring machine (TBM) Evelyn broke through into a pre-prepared shaft at St John’s Wood, northwest London, following a year-long 7.26 km drive from Willesden, west London.

The tunnelling “output was reliable. We built on an efficient launch and maintained good progress. The best single shift advance was greater than 50 m in 12 hours” said Costain’s Project Manager, Andrew Firth. “The machine performed very well.”

Evelyn will now be lifted out of the St John’s Wood shaft and transported by road to Wandsworth, south London, from which it will begin driving a 3.5 km tunnel towards Wimbledon, in the capital’s southwest suburbs.

Once that is completed in around six months, the TBM will again be transported by road, this time back to Wandsworth, from where it will set out on its final, 9 km drive to Kensal Green.

The remaining 13 km of the route, meanwhile, is being handled by a second TBM, Cleopatra, which is tunnelling from South Tottenham, north London, to St John’s Wood. The TBMs’ crews are a mix of personnel from Costain and its tunnelling partners, VVB and Joseph Gallagher.
