Makeover for historic

Built of iron and glass, the station was last refurbished in the mid 1990sMakeover for historic
Hellifield station

Passengers using the 133 year-old Hellifield station in the Yorkshire Dales will soon be able to appreciate it in all its original glory as Network Rail prepares to give the station a makeover.

While there has been a station at the site since 1849, the existing station canopy was constructed in 1880 by the Midland Railway and is a Grade 2 listed building.

Built of iron and glass, the station was last refurbished in the mid 1990s. With the Pennine weather having taken its toll, Network Rail this week begins a £500,000 project to repair and redecorate the station’s structural steelwork and glazing.

Network Rail is delivering the project alongside its contractor J Murphy & Sons who will erect a scaffold to allow workers to access, repair and redecorate the station canopy.    Network Rail route managing director Dyan Crowther commented: “This is a beautiful old building and the investment we are making to sympathetically refurbish it will safeguard its future and allow passengers to continue to enjoy the station in decades to come.”

The station is managed by Northern Rail and will remain open throughout the refurbishment, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Richard Allan, Area Director for Northern Rail, comments: “Investment of this kind into our rural stations is extremely welcome and Hellifield will hugely benefit from this refurbishment. Our customers will be greeted by a brighter and more welcoming environment and be able to enjoy the unique surroundings this historic station has to offer.”
