Senior
Construction Heads
Out of Touch
with Reality

As the construction industry tries to find its way out of the current economic situation, there is a lot of discussion on levels of unemployment.

The talk is more and more about apprenticeships which are a well proven way of making a career in the construction industry. At conferences and in the newspapers, CEOs of major construction companies promote their support of such schemes and most major companies do have active inhouse schemes.

This is where the hypocrisy begins.

For young people to understand that today, working in the construction industry, does not mean knowing how to use a shovel. to dig a trench. It is a much more sophisticated industry than that; making full use of the latest computer technology. So why is it so difficult to tell them?

The very same construction companies that talk about promoting the industry to young people have such restrictive policies on communicating, that editors are not allowed to visit their construction sites to show the world just how exciting and challenging it is.

If the young people are to enter the industry, they need to be informed. It is up to the CEOs to instruct their press and communications people to open up more and allow reporting on some of the more challenging aspects of the construction industry.

Crossrail is a good example of communicating. So we know what is going on under the streets of London. But take projects such as The Shard, the British Museum development, etc. How were the challenging foundations and other works done? Nobody seems to know.

I have written reports on works for projects in London only for the primary contractor to put a block on it - the very same companies who’s CEOs are often pictured promoting apprenticeship schemes!

Next time I have an article for approval, perhaps I should circumvent the communications department and go straight to the top - that’s were the buck should stop. Or is it in the all too restrictive PR Department?
