Contractors World UK -Ireland - Mega Brace Takes the Weight for Warrington WaterworksMega Brace Takes the Weight for Warrington Waterworks

Groundforce’s Mega Brace struts have helped contractor DCT Civil Engineering with the installation of a new waste water treatment plant at Bewsey Bridge, near Warrington.

The £10 million project for client United Utilities replaces two sewage pumping stations which are coming towards the end of their useful lives. A new pumping station was required to reduce the risk of pollution in the Sankey Valley area during exceptionally heavy rainfall.

DCT Civil Engineering was awarded the contract to construct a new pumping station and work commenced in April 2012. Because most of the plant is located below ground level, a large excavation was required and Groundforce was called on to provide structural support to the sides.

The contractor reduced the ground by 5 m to level the site, battering the sides to prevent collapse, and then installed a retaining wall of sheet piles to a further depth of 6 m. At the foot of the piled retaining wall, a reinforced concrete ring beam was cast before excavating a further 5 m to the sandstone bedrock.

Inside the excavation DCT has built a 25 metre octagonal reinforced concrete chamber which will contain wet and dry wells, as well as pumping equipment to process flows from the local sewer network.
