The Coldest Journey

Our associated magazine, Contractors World - International is following the very demanding challenge that Sir Ranulph Fines undertook to cross the Antarctic in the middle of winter. A feat yet to be achieved. Unfortunately, due to a small accident, he had to leave the expedition just before it set out on the journey and had to fly back to civilization.

Finning has modified and supplied two ‘Arctic-ready’ Cat D6Ns for the world’s first winter crossing of Antarctica, which began on March 21st 2013. The Coldest Journey expedition is taking place between the two seasonal equinoxes, 20 March – 20 September, with Ice Team members Brian Newham, Ian Prickett, Dr Robert Lambert, and Finning engineers Spencer Smirl and Richmond Dykes.

The entirely self-sufficient team will travel 2,400 miles from Crown Bay to Captain Scott’s base at McMurdo Sound – via the South Pole - in temperatures approaching -90°C and in near permanent darkness.

The challenge is being undertaken to draw attention to raising funds to restore sight to people in developing countries. The theme is “Seeing is Believing’.  Full details and other information on the expedition can be found at the expedition web site.
