Roger Lindley - Publisher-EditorEditorial Comment

Will the Government Listen?

Still the corridors of Westminster echo to the cries of investment in infrastructure and stimulating new house building to create jobs.  But, like the many tax incentives being announced, they will only be implemented after the next election.  A sort of 'early day manifesto' of what will be if you re-elect us.  That's 2015.  Can the industry wait that long?

As latest data shows, investing in infrastructure has many knock-on effects that draw industry and commercial ventures in to benefit from the advantages that road and rail investments bring.

In this issue, we report on the vast amount of office development taking place along the 26 mile route of the CrossRail link.  What is not covered is the investment in new house building that will follow to the west and east of London as the new rail link will provide a fast, reliable commuter route into London.

Imagine the investment opportunities if the Government has the foresight to accept Norman Foster's, Boris Johnson's or one of the other proposed Thames Estuary airports.  Job immediately and in the future for as the new airport opened and flights transfered from Heathrow, so there would be scope to redevelop the very expensive land that Heathrow sits on.  Not to mention the removal of a blight on thousands of households that have to put up with the almost incessant noise of aircraft overhead.

Such a scheme would also open up both sides of the Thames to the east of London.

Plantworx Fast Approaching

The inaugural Plantworx exhibition organized by the CEA will be with us in no time.  Once Bauma is over (in the next month) all eyes in the UK will focus for a while on Stoneleigh.

I urge the industry to support the event.  A dedicated team has put a lot of effort into planning and organizing the three day event and they deserve support.  And, if you are visiting, why not take advantage of the special Contractors World Lunch/Dinner menu being offered by the conveniently located Ramada Warwick Hotel.
