Crossrail’s tunnelling machine Sophia gets going as work starts on newest rail tunnel under the Thames Machine specially equipped to deal with chalk and flint ground conditions in southeast London Crossrail will cut journey times to central London by up to 20 minutes for local residents Sophia, (named after the wife of Marc Isambard Brunel who built the first tunnel under the Thames) Crossrail’s fifth tunnelling machine, has began her journey from Plumstead to North Woolwich.

Caterpillar is upgrading its equal sized tyre machine range in line with the rest of the F Series product family. The new Cat 434F is mechanically controlled while the 444F, equipped with pilot joystick controls, can be fitted with either a 4.27 m (14 feet) or a 4.87 m (16 feet) backhoe.

Getting the right balance can save you £’000s on tax

One of the surprises in the 2012 Autumn Statement was a temporary tenfold increase in the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) from £25,000 to £250,000 for capital expenditure incurred on eligible plant and machinery (new or used but not cars) on/after 1st January 2013 and before 1st January 2015. After this period the AIA is destined to revert back to £25,000.
