Another year almost over It is almost Christmas and the Chancellor has made his Autumn statement so why isn’t everyone out partying? Probably because there is nothing much to celebrate. The Autumn budget statement was, as expected, very long on promises of more investment and particularly upbeat about the improving state of the economy. Unfortunately, the statement is lacking in any immediate initiatives that gives one reason to celebrate. Notwithstanding this, as articles in Contractors World show, contractors are finding work, and investing in new plant and equipment. However, as CECA and CIRIA report, latest statistics and market data show little room for optimism in the short term. Although the outlook is improving. As 4 ladies - Ada, Victoria, Elizabeth and Phyllis - are busy burrowing their way underneath London as part of CrossRail tunnelling works, there are also some significant works in the wind farm sector and major projects such as the new Forth Road Bridge. These are good for the major contractors and many sub-contractors, what is missing is an initiative to get our roads and streets back to a serviceable state. Local contractors and plant hire companies are often only able to work within a radius dictated by the cost of transporting equipment and employees. With regional and local councils under pressure to reduce costs further, there is little room for optimism among these people. A kick start to housing projects could help. However, the Government talks about ‘affordable housing’, Even the smallest new-build in parts of the Southeast requires a deposit of over £20,000 in order to get a mortgage; never mind all the other costs of setting up a home. And do not look to the banks for help, if our recent experience with the big banks is anything to go by. We approached two big high street banks to open up a new account. One did not even bother to reply to telephone calls and the other worked on the principle of ‘what’s the hurry?. The team handling the paper banking does not talk to the team managing telephone banking and neither of these talk to the team managing Internet banking. After almost 4 months, we eventually got the account open and working. I thought the Government promised easier banking for small businesses? Am I alone in thinking that many of our elected leaders live on a different planet? Or are they just wearing John Lennon’s famous rose tinted glasses? I have it on good authority that 2013 is going to be a bumper year. How do I know? A politician told me! |
