The London 2012 Olympic Games bring a temporary respite
As an editor, I am regularly having to make judgements on suitability of editorial for Contractors World magazines. Trying to keep the content balanced to provide something of interest to all facets of the construction and related industries can be difficult at times.
While immersed in the BBC coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games, I suddenly realised that the rest of the world had come to a virtual standstill. There was little news of the Euro crisis, the US Presidential race (why we have to have so much coverage of this is beyond me at times), crime, politicians, bankers and Wikileak.
How refreshing to hear Claire Balding commentating on a variety of sporting achievements instead of the diatribe of politicians who have developed the knack of continuing to talk, without stopping for breath, during interviews. Kenneth Clark is the master at this.
However, after two weeks, normal service has been resumed, but the holiday was nice. Back to reality and little as changed. See the article in this issue on the dire position for the construction industry and please add your comments and thoughts to our LinkedIn page. With enough banging, perhaps the Government will hear.
A refreshing change
I have often written about the difficulty in getting on to construction sites to do the site reports that are of interest to so many readers. It seems that there may be changes in progress.
After a charming conversation with a senior press officer at the Highways Agency they have said that, as far as possible, they will facilitate site visits, etc on the understanding that work progress and site safety sometime makes this difficult.
CrossRail is also making more information available and permit appropriate use of their excellent videos that are available. The British Museum is very open and gave permission for their contractors, Mace and PJ Carey to give me details, images and video of the new extension currently under construction.
The above access to more site information, videos and images will further enhance the editorial of Contractors World magazines.
Spread the word
If you find our magazines of interest, please share the link with colleagues who may also find it interesting. Digital publications have dispensed with the need for an ‘internal circulation’ label attached to printed magazines. Everyone can have their own copy, read what they want, when they want to.
Remember, Contractors World - UK & Ireland edition is the only free to read magazine (with no need to register) serving the industry across UK and Ireland.
And, drop me the occasional email if you have a comment to make - but no spam!
