Update on CrossRail Progress - continued

Edward Prosser, Marketing Manager at Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd said: “We are delighted to have completed the first ever UK sale of this distinct piece of equipment and are really excited that it’s already being used on such an iconic project as the London Crossrail.

“These hybrids are probably the most reliable and technologically-advanced in the industry today and represent a truly new generation of excavators. They are not only designed to provide optimum performance, but also offer significant fuel savings compared with other similar excavators, meaning clients can reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time.”

The hybrid excavator boasts an average 25% less fuel consumption than a traditional excavator and approximately 30% less CO2 emissions. Its unique design sees an electric swing motor used in place of the traditional hydraulic motor which captures and regenerates energy, converting it into electric energy which is then stored for use when the motor needs to accelerate, thus significantly reducing fuel consumption.

Stuart Jones, Director at Ridgway Rentals, said: “With the Government pledging to embrace new technologies in a bid to make the capital significantly ‘greener’ and to reduce the city’s CO2 emissions by 60% over the next ten years, it seems apt that this particular piece of equipment has been selected to be used on one of its largest scale projects. Feedback from our client who is currently using the excavator on the London Crossrail project is that it not only performs well but uses a lot less fuel, which has got to be win-win for everyone.

“We are thrilled to have taken delivery of the first of these hybrids and, with no excavators of this kind currently on the market, means we’re able to offer something a little bit different to our customers. We’re currently awaiting delivery of the other four hybrids and are very much looking forward to showcasing to our clients nationwide just what they can offer.”

Crossrail awards Custom House station construction contractCrossrail awards Custom House station construction contract

Crossrail has announced its intention to award the main construction contract for C520 Custom House station to Laing O’Rourke Construction Ltd.

The new Crossrail Custom House station, located in east London, is the only above ground station within Crossrail’s central section.

Martin Buck, Crossrail’s Commercial Director said: “The new Crossrail station at Custom House will not only assist with the continued regeneration of the Royal Docks but also improve links between central London and the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. When Crossrail opens, passengers will be able to reach Canary Wharf in 4 minutes, Bond Street in 17 minutes and Heathrow Airport in less than 45 minutes.”

The new Crossrail station will be built on the site of the former North London Line station which closed to passengers in December 2006. The new station will include a new ticket hall, interchange with Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and step-free access between the street and Crossrail platforms.

Custom House Crossrail station will be located at the junction of Victoria Dock Road and Freemasons Road, London. Construction will begin in early 2013. The indicative value of the contract when originally advertised was in the region of £35 million.

In February 2012, Crossrail confirmed the shortlist for C520 Custom House station. The following organisations were invited to tender:

Costain Limited; Geoffrey Osbourne Limited; Hochtief UK Construction Limited and Hochtief Solutions AG JV and Laing O’Rourke Construction Limited.

A total of eight new Crossrail stations will be constructed – Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Custom House. Berkeley Homes has also agreed to build a Station Box at Woolwich.
