Today, plant operators and feet managers are having to face ever increasing challenges. The latest being to ensure that the correct grade diesel is used in the machines - the wrong fuel grade could prove very costly. And, whereas in the past, litle thought was given to the cost of fuel, today it is a serious consideratons. So the demand is for more efciency, more productvity, increased reliability and lower cost of ownership.

One company, Wiltshire-based Earthline, recently evaluated replacement wheel loaders and decided on Bell. Since its foundation 30 years ago, the company has grown to be one of the largest independent earthmoving, recycling and quarrying companies in the south of England.

Like every other business in its feld, the family run company has experienced tough periods, but it has remained successful through diversifcaton and a commitment to being fexible to customer needs.

The diversifcaton of applicatons means that they also have to ensure that much of the equipment the company buys is capable of performing well at diferent tasks and in diferent environments as well as meetng other performance criteria

This is one of the reasons for opting to evaluate a demonstration wheeled loader from Bell Equipment at its Shellingford Quarry site, near Faringdon, in Oxfordshire.

Earthline director Philip Coplestone said: “I was a bit nervous and sceptcal at frst, as Bell’s loaders are relatvely new machines to the UK market. Bell has always been known in this country for its ADTs, though the fact that they are John Deere-built gave us some confdence.

“The Bell loaders look like really solid quarrying machines. The high spec and the build quality stands out.”

The demonstraton went well, the company chose to go with one Bell L1806E wheel loader, even though they had pencilled in an opton for another brand.

Philip explained: “We don’t like to put all our eggs in one basket, and we were keen to see the Bells in a real operatonal environment. The demonstraton was enough to persuade us to put our toe in the water and actually order one.”

Good fortune also smiled on Bell.

Earthline discovered one morning that one of its other loaders had been vandal ised overnight, meaning an urgent replacement was needed. Coplestone got in touch with Bell and agreed to order a second L1806E loader in return for Bell loaning a larger L2606E model at short notce to fll the operatonal gap while waitng for the new machine to be delivered.

The newly acquired Bell loaders play a vital role in material handling for Earthline.
