R J Brooks & Son Ltd

A new Volvo EC18C mini excavator has been delivered to plant hire and groundworking contractors R J Brooks & Son Ltd of Crediton, Devon. According to proprietor Simon Brooks, this was due to the performance and reliability of a previous Volvo ECR58 model and the service and support provided by Volvo’s utility dealer, Plant & Engineering Services.

R J Brooks & Son Ltd, a family run business undertakes all manner of groundworking contracts from small private jobs to large £1 m plus projects.

“The EC18C is an ideal size for most of the smaller projects we undertake and based on our past experience with the larger machine, I have to say I can’t fault the product,” says Mr Brooks. “It’s also re-assuring to know we can rely on Volvo’s local dealer for service and back up and the team at Plant & Engineering Services do just that,” he continued.

To enhance the versatility of the excavator, the company acquired a hydraulically operated tilt bucket which is ideally suited to grading and backfilling applications. The machine is also used on hammer work and both hammer and tilt functions are easily accomplished because of the standard fitment of hammer / shear lines on the machine.

Doosan Excavators In Vital Flood Relief ContractDoosan Excavators In Vital Flood Relief Contract

A fleet of five Doosan crawler excavators have been used on a prestigious flood relief contract in the picturesque village of Delph near Oldham, Lancashire, UK. Supplied by Total Plant Hire Ltd, based in Manchester, the applications for the Doosan excavators, the biggest of which was a 34 tonne DX340LC model, have included the construction of a new underground stormwater storage tank with a diameter of 25 m and a depth of 22 m. The new stormwater tank will help to prevent sewers overflowing and flooding the surrounding area during periods of heavy rainfall.

The new tank is part of the £5 million sewer upgrade project being carried out by Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions working with the Network Construction Alliance on behalf of United Utilities. The project forms part of United Utilities’ $5 billion investment programme between 2010 and 2015, to upgrade water and sewerage infrastructure and improve the environment across North West England. The entire project is expected to be up and running by Spring 2012. As well as the storage tank, the project involves connecting sewers in private land and laying bigger sewers in to help prevent the drainage network from overflowing.

The range of applications for the DX340LC excavator runs from heavy construction and excavation to development of construction sites, construction and renovation of highways and other large works of civil engineering as well as mining and quarrying. The long carriage (LC) design offers exceptional stability and safety in all kinds of operating circumstances, including heavy material-shifting and lifting applications. The DX340LC has an operating weight of 33.96 tonne and, with the standard 3.2 m arm, offers a maximum digging depth of 7.533 mm.
