Burlington Stone Puts Case Duo On The Slate

Leading slate and stone producer, Burlington Stone, has added a Case CX470B crawler excavator and a 921E wheeled loader to the equipment feet at its Kirkby-in-Furness Quarry, Cumbria. The 921E replaces an older Case loader, while the heavy duty excavator is a new addition to the firm’s quarry and earthmoving feet.

Both machines are used at the quarry face, where the slate is drilled, cut into blocks by wire saws and removed for transportaton to secondary cutting facilities on site. This high grade material is then sold as roofing slate and as architectural stone for constructon and building use. Burlington slate is used for floor tiles, flagstones, stone cladding and for individual design projects. All of the wheeled loaders at the site, one of seven working quarries that the company operates within the Lake District National Park, have been supplied by local Case dealer Dennis Barnfeld.

Burlington relies on the dealer for initial service work during the warranty period and for spare parts supply throughout the machines’ working life. The company’s own full maintenance crew handles service and repair work within the quarries.

“We buy Case equipment for its reliability and for the good service that we get from Barnfeld,” says Burlington’s managing director Rob Irwin.

“We generally tend to run our machines for about 10 years, so we get the best of the frst life out of the equipment. The machines are easy to operate and to service, and they represent good value for money.”

Both machines have been supplied in standard specifcaton, although the 47 t. CX470B is equipped with a full FOPS protectve structure to provide maximum safety for the operator at the quarry face. Powered by a 362 hp (270 kW) engine, in standard confguraton the excavator ofers a bucket breakout force of 247 kN and a swing torque of 150 kN. The 30 t. loading shovel weighs just under 30 tonnes and is equipped with a ful 274 hp (204 kW) engine, a combinaton able to provide straight tpping load of 19,420 kg and a lif capacity of 13,450 kg.
