Crossrail - The UK’s largest construction project

Royal Oak Portal

Work is progressing at various stages of the east-west railway link being constructed, mainly underground, providing a fast efficient route to traverse London.

Royal Oak Portal is a key part of the Crossrail programme as i t i s the ent ry point for the Herrenknecht AG tunnel boring machines (TBMs) which will create the railway’s running tunnels to Farringdon.

Construction of Royal Oak Portal, the first of

five new tunnel portals to be constructed for Crossrail, commenced in January 2010 and was completed ahead of schedule in September 2011. The portal structure will be used for the construction of the new twin-bore tunnels, and, in the future, will provide a western entrance and exit for trains to the underground sectons of Crossrail.
