Sellafield Ltd commences module delivery operations Delivery by barge to UK’s largest nuclear site

The completion of the UK’s largest current nuclear project, Evaporator D, has moved a stage nearer with the successful

completon of the frst of the module delivery stages required for this impressive project.

The first two of the planned eleven massive modules required for the facility were successfully transported via Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT) 1.5 kilometres from the Interserve Pioneer Point facility, Cheshire to the specialist barge the Terra Marique, moored at Manchester ship canal.

The modules, which consist of structural steel, stainless steel pipework, vessels and other equipment, weighing over 100 tonnes, measure 10 m high, 7.5 m wide and almost 10 m in length, made an imposing sight as they were loaded onto the barge prior to sailing the 145 km north to a beach adjacent to the Sellafeld site on the West Cumbrian Coast. Using sea transport for the frst tme in the history of the Sellafeld site, the modules were conveyed to the Sellafeld beach, of loaded from the barge and driven across a purpose built bridge across the River Ehen, which runs parallel to the site.

The fnal stage of the module delivery project involved the SPMTs transportng the modules onto the Sellafeld site to be placed in a purpose built storage area prior to installaton in the Evaporator D building.

Preparing access

In order to provide a suitable incline across the beach areas had to both be excavated (cut) and material added. This was in the region of an additonal 1 metre (above the current beach level) at its highest point and stretches approximately 80 m.

In order to provide a suitable incline through the Ehen Spit a cut area of approximately 55 m long at a width of 10 m.
